From August 21 to August 25, the Township of Acquaformosa (a small arberesh community in the province of Cosenza) is going to host the fourth edition of the Festival of Migrations: an event that is connected with one of the most renown cases of immigrants reception in our region, well known and studied even outside Calabria. Organized by the Township of Acquaformosa and by the Association don Vincenzo Matrangolo, the Festival is also supported by the Unar (Ufficio Nazionale Antidiscriminazioni Razziali, the National Office against Racial Discrimination) and the Sprar (Sistema di protezione per richiedenti asilo e rifugiati, the Protection Programme for asylum-seekers and refugees), and promoted by the Province of Cosenza and the Region of Calabria.

Six days full of meetings, conferences and presentations of books, music and cabaret acts. “This summer too- reads a note released by the organizers – our programme distinguishes itself for a very rich offer and is open to a varied audience.” In a historical moment when the theme of immigration is on the first pages of all newspapers, being a cause for concern throughout the whole of Europe, the Town of Acquaformosa points out the importance of a good policy of reception for the benefit of people who come to Italy in search of a better future, or even of basic rights. Our ban is on those who try to win a few votes by making meaningless statements that are conducive to racial discrimination”.

“2015 – says Giovanni Manoccio, the councillor responsible for immigrants reception in Acquaformosa – is a particularly significant year when it comes to immigration issues. The Sprar projects that are being carried out within our territory can (and must) set an example to be adopted in many other social contexts: not only is immigrants reception a social duty, but it also is a value for a culture like ours, that condemns the continual assertions of politicians such as Matteo Salvini, aimed at achieving a general consensus by exploiting the dramas of many poor people”.

A debate on Africa titled “Poverty in Africa: yesterday and today” is going to open the event. On August 23, 99 Posse, a well-known band from Campania made famous by the hit “Curre curre guagliò” is scheduled to be on stage. Women are going to be the protagonists of the closing night, with a conference dedicated to them whose many speakers will include Federica Roccisano, the Councillor in charge of Working Policies, and Giovanna Martelli, president of the Equal Opportunities Committee.
