edited_vela 6x3Everything is set for the third edition of the “Marathon of the Aragonese” which will take place on June 12th starting in Castrovillari. The initiative was agreed upon by representatives of all the agencies for the Circuit of the Natural Parks that participate in the “Parks Competition” with ASD Cycling Castrovillari and the Italian Cycling Federation.

Three types of routes for participants with different itineraries: the 62 kilometer Marathon at an altitude of more than 2000 meters; the Gran Fondo of 47 kilometers over 1700 meters above sea level; and 27 kilometer l’Escursionistico, 950 meters above sea level. All for the pleasure of those who want to “dive” into the green area of this zone, which lend itself to any kind of excursion.

The cycling event, organized with the help of the Pollino National Park and sponsored by the municipalities of Castrovillari, Civita and Frascineto, requires a structured program that will begin the morning of Saturday June 11th with initiatives re “riding” and “walking,” titled “Waiting for the Marathon” to discover or rediscover the Pollino Territory, rich in environmental-tourist itineraries.

In the morning you will begin the route “Pollino places: paths through protected areas” including Campotenese and the Lavender Flower Park, Civita and the Canyon of Raganello and again, Frascineto with its rocky landscapes and ancient hermitages, a unique opportunity to delve into a unique heritage Arbëresh that the Calabria Citra has offered for centuries, with the support of the official guides of the Park.  In the afternoon of the same day, the visits deal more specifically with, “the scenery and sounds of the Pollino” amongst the beautiful walking trails and live music.

It will also be possible to walk or bike the pedestrian trail that unfolds between Castrovillari and Morano Calabro. “Recovered by the administration for the municipality of Pollino, in a precise ad-hoc project by the Mayor of Castrovillari and Councillor for Sport, Domenico Lo Polito, is inserted in the project “Experiencing Nature” that connects, on the old railway line of the ex-FCL, the capital of Pollino a Morano, on a charming path that today is an oasis of relaxation, in which to enjoy these unspoiled places.

The lower part of this track is much easier for walkers and cyclists as well as accessible to children. “There are 5 flat kilometers (one way), adds the organizers, which are often used for the sole pleasure of viewing the setting and landscapes that allow us to return home gratified.”

Sunday, June 12th, will be the cyclists turn with the gathering of Southern Italy’s athletes of all levels, which for the day, will populate the Calabrian side of the Pollino National Park.

The route follows a course of absolute beauty.  A few kilometers from the start, the athletes will be measured with the “imperticata,” the most extreme climb of the circuit.

The Marathon Village will be set up in the park of Via Polisportivo where there will be stands of local businesses in the sector and an info-point by the Italian Army.  First Aid services will be handled by the Italian Red Cross. The Mountain Rescue Service with the Police force and many voluntary associations will ensure assistance and security along the way. More info here qui
